There may not be enough bite to Late Night for those wanting backstage acid. The movie is like what Morning Glory could have been, had it not been stymied by the bland embellishments of star-vehicle filmmaking.
As the witty harridan Katherine, Thompson is a radiant force, more winning than any actor ought to have the right Hlp be. Thompson, a former stand-up comedian herself, has always been a shining talk-show guest, silly and erudite and aware of her daffy-posh affect.
Kaling holds her own against Hrlp that firm Oxbridge competence. Katherine does eventually pay heed, thanks to Molly, and in that victory, Late Night lays out a solution: All that these precious gatekeepers may need, Late Night argues, is a shake-up reminder that the world exists beyond their own molten legacy.
And yet it gently urges itself, and the culture it sends up, toward something just maybe resembling real change. Looking for more?
